Pacific Rim Review

Pacific-Rim-2013-Movie-Poster-Wallpapers

**Warning.** I am not going to have any major spoilers but there might be minor spoilers below. You have been warned!!

Summary:

A dimensional rift has opened up between Earth and another world and out comes the gigantic beasts that have been codenamed Kaiju. The Kaiju are terrorizing the planet destroying whatever they encounter. Our response to the Kaiju are the Jaeger‘s gigantic robots.

My Thoughts:

I have to say right off the bat I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Yes like most of the other critics out there I have seen some things that just don’t work in this movie. But there is a lot of things that do work well in this movie. And lets get it out of the way yes Guillermo del Toro did use influences from the early Godzilla movies, yes there are influences of a lot of the 1980s fighting robot anime. There is a scene in the movie where both E-Roc (The Awesome Movie Podcast) and I both leaned over and said “straight out of Voltron“. So yes those elements are in there. Do I think he ripped off the ideas from said shows? No. I think he is paying homage to all the past monster and robot movies and television shows and giving us something for the 21st century.

Now this movie is visually stunning. The set designers and those in charge of the Kaiju and Jaegers should be commended for doing such a fantastic job with them. Not once did I get pulled out of the movie because of some gimmicky trick or noticing tell tell signs that the image was superimposed over the film.

We got to see it in IMAX 3D and I have to say seeing it in IMAX was outstanding. Seeing these gigantic monsters and robots fighting on such a large screen was eye opening and I would highly recommend. If there is an IMAX near you go check it out. The 3D was pretty good but I do not think it is a must to enjoy this movie, though I do not think you can go to the IMAX screenings without it coming with 3D. Its not going to take away from the experience of the movie but I just do not think it adds a whole lot to it.

Like I stated in my opening there are flaws to this movie and I guess the first one is the dialogue isn’t great. To me the dialogue is there to fill in the gaps between the Kaiju and Jaeger fights. But this didn’t ruin the movie for me, because really what are you really looking for in this movie? Kaiju vs. Jaeger. And the movie delivers on that point you get multiple fights and  just like in your old Godzilla movies you get all different kinds of Kaiju showing up to take on the Jaegers.

The other flaw to me in this movie was that it tried to insert comedic elements into it with Charlie Day and Ron Perlman‘s characters and to me it just didn’t seem to fit with the overall feel of the movie. For majority of the movie you are getting that gritty world feeling where there is not a lot of hope. And I get it they probably didn’t want to be all debbie downers but to me it just felt forced.

And there is a mid-credit easter egg so stay until then. There is no end of credit easter egg.

My Recommendation:

Go see this movie in the theater. If you have an IMAX nearby go see it on the huge screen. I do not think you will be disappointed in it at all. If you grew up watching the Godzilla movies, Robotech, Battletech, Voltron, Neon Genesis Evangelion I believe you will enjoy it. It will take you back to the days when we got to watch this stuff on television.
